Create a new virtual machine In the previous section, we converted a physical workload to a virtual machine using SCVMM. In this section, we will create a virtual machine and add it to the library. In a production environment, you could load an operating system onto your new virtual machine and use it for consolidation of your physical servers. 1. Switch to the VMM Console. 2. From the Actions pane, click New Virtual Machine. The New Virtual Machine Wizard will appear. Note the steps on the left pane. 3. On the Select Source page, select Create the new virtual machine with a blank virtual hard disk, and then click Next. Note the steps on the left side. Figure 80 Select Source page 4. On the Virtual Machine Identity page, type New Blank VM for the virtual machine name, and then click Next. Leave the default owner, Contoso/Administrator. You may enter a description if you would like. Figure 81 Virtual Machine Identity page 5. On the Configure Hardware page under Hardware Profile, select Virtual Hard Disk. Because the virtual hard disk has not yet been fully created, the hardware profile will list it as invalid. Figure 82 Configure Hardware page 6. Still on the Configure Hardware page, leave the Create a new virtual hard disk option selected and type 10240 in the size field to set the maximum virtual hard disk size to 10 GB, a standard virtual machine disk size. Leave Dynamic for the type of hard disk and leave the default channel setting. Figure 83 Configure Hardware page 7. Type NewVirtualMachine.VHD in the Destination file name field. 8. From the New menu in the Hardware profile box, click Network Adapter in order to create a new network adapter for the virtual machine to use. From the Connected to: drop-down menu, select the External Network, and then click Next. The name of your physical adapter will appear in parentheses. Figure 84 Configure Hardware page 9. On the Select Destination page, select Store the virtual machine in the library. In this test scenario, we will not install an operating system on this virtual machine. Click Next. If you choose to place the virtual machine on a host, you can then start the virtual machine and install an operating system on it. Figure 85 Select Destination page 10. On the Select Path page, leave the default library server selected, and then click Browse. 11. Expand MSSCVMMLibrary. Select VHDs, and then click OK. Figure 86 Select Destination folder
12. On the Select Path page, leave the default settings for the library server and path, and then click Next. Figure 87 Select Path page 13. On the Summary page, review the information, and then click Create. Figure 88 Summary page
